There have been many famous and history-altering bands and musicians to hail from the UK. The Beatles, with their first hit, “Love Me Do” in 1962, changed the face of music forever. The Kinks, started by brothers, Dave and Ray Davies, was one of the most influential rock bands of their time. The Rolling Stones mixed various genres to create a unique sound of their own. Led Zeppelin, yes, the drummer, Rick Allen, only had one arm. Pink Floyd with numerous albums, all to be remembered. The Who, what showmanship, no band could out-rock them. And of course, Queen.
Freddie Mercury (originally Farouk Balsara) was the front man. He played guitar and piano and sang with such feeling and emotion that captivated all who heard him. Accompanied by guitarist, Brian May, bassist, John Deacon and drummer, Roger Taylor, this band was made for stardom. Their hits in the 70's, 80's and 90's are still requested on radio stations, their albums still selling in record stores and downloaded on the internet worldwide.
In 1988 rumours began to spread of Mercury's illness. He was suffering from AIDS, but refused to confirm any rumours, instead, he would deny them right to his death bed. As Mercury's face looked increasingly gaunt and his physical condition worsened, the other band members became concerned that he would not be able to perform. But, Freddie Mercury, ever the performer, would belt out the lyrics with the increasing emotion which accompanied his terrible illness.
Knowing that his end was near, Freddie Mercury prepared a statement to be read on his death bed. And on the 23rd of November 1991 he read his statement, confirming that he did indeed have AIDS. Within 24 hours he had passed away from bronchial pneumonia due to complications of AIDS. A private funeral was held on the 27th of November in West London.
Freddie Mercury's final scenes in front of a camera included in a music video for the single: “These Are the Days of Our Lives” which went to, and stayed at, number one in the UK for five weeks.
Never before was a man more determined to make it to the top. Born for stardom; made for music.
